What Happens After a Business Expo? Turning Conversations into Customers

By Sara Skeffington

You've spent the day meeting new people, having conversations and making connections with businesses from across the region. But what happens once the exhibition stands have been packed away, and everyone has headed home?

Attending a business expo is a great opportunity to introduce your business to new people, but the real value often comes from what happens afterwards.

Whether you've been exhibiting or visiting, taking the time to follow up with the people you've met can help turn those initial conversations into lasting business relationships and new opportunities.

Making the most of your new connections

One of the biggest benefits of attending a business expo is the number of people you can meet in one place.

Throughout the day, you might speak to potential customers, discover a new supplier or meet another business owner who could introduce you to someone in their network.

Not every conversation will lead to an immediate opportunity, and that's absolutely fine.

Sometimes, a connection made at an expo can develop into something valuable, weeks or even months down the line. The important thing is keeping those conversations going once the event has finished.

Don't leave it too long to follow up

After a busy day of networking, it's easy to put your new contacts to one side and get caught up in your usual workload.

However, following up while the conversation is still fresh can make a real difference.

A simple message thanking someone for their time and mentioning something you discussed is often enough to get the conversation started again.

Whether it's connecting on LinkedIn, sending a quick email or arranging a catch up over coffee, a friendly follow up shows that you've taken a genuine interest in the person and their business.

It's not always about making a sale

While generating new business is often a key reason for attending an expo, some of the most valuable connections aren't necessarily potential customers.

You might meet a business offering a service that could benefit your own organisation, someone you could collaborate with on a future project or a professional who can introduce you to other useful contacts.

Building these relationships is just as important as securing an immediate sale.

At Shout, we've seen how bringing businesses together can open the door to opportunities that might not have happened otherwise.

Sometimes, the person you meet won't need your services themselves, but they might know someone who does.

Keep the conversation going

Business relationships rarely develop from just one conversation.

Once you've made that initial connection, it's worth looking for opportunities to stay in touch.

That could mean arranging a meeting to learn more about each other's businesses, engaging with their posts on LinkedIn or inviting them along to another event.

Attending regular networking meetings can also be a great way to build on the connections you've already made.

Our Shout Networking Groups bring local businesses together fortnightly, giving members and guests the opportunity to get to know one another in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Rather than trying to fit everything into one conversation at an expo, you have the chance to build relationships over time.

Make a plan for your next event

If you've attended a business expo before, you'll know just how quickly the day can go.

With so many businesses to meet and conversations taking place, it's easy to leave with a collection of business cards and struggle to remember who you spoke to!

Before attending your next event, think about what you'd like to get out of the day.

Are you hoping to meet potential customers, find new suppliers, explore partnerships or simply introduce your business to more people?

Having a few goals in mind can help you make the most of your time. It's also worth making a note of the conversations you'd like to follow up on while they're still fresh.

And remember, you don't need to speak to everyone in the room. A handful of meaningful conversations can be far more valuable than collecting as many contacts as possible.

Your next opportunity starts with a conversation

At Shout Connect, our business expos are all about bringing businesses together, helping people make new connections and creating opportunities across the North West.

Whether you're an experienced exhibitor or thinking about attending your first expo, there's always someone new to meet and something to take away from the day.

And while the event itself might only last a few hours, the relationships you build can continue long after the doors have closed.
